Channel Tunnel Group Boosts Maintenance with Stertil-Koni EARTHLIFT

Channel Tunnel Group has incorporated Stertil-Koni’s advanced EARTHLIFT column lifts into its maintenance program, in a move to elevate operational efficiency. This investment is set to improve productivity and safety in lifting specialised tunnel maintenance vehicles and large forklifts used within the access tunnels adjacent to the main rail lines.

Stertil-Koni’s EARTHLIFT model ST1085FRA delivers an impressive lifting capacity of 8.5 tonnes per column. When used in sets of four, these lifts can handle up to 34 tonnes - providing Channel Tunnel Group with the heavy-duty lifting capability required for its unique maintenance fleet.

Channel Tunnel’s choice of the EARTHLIFT was driven by its pioneering Active Energy Retrieval System, which offers a sustainable way to conserve energy during operations. This unique technology utilises the gravitational force from the vehicle’s descent to recharge the batteries, increasing the number of lift cycles by around 35% compared to traditional systems. For Channel Tunnel’s maintenance teams, this translates to fewer power requirements, minimised recharging time, and reduced operating costs - allowing them to maximise output with lower environmental impact.

Each EARTHLIFT column is equipped with Stertil-Koni’s eBright Smart Control System, which utilises wireless connectivity and full-colour touch screens to streamline lift operation. This system supports technicians with real-time visual feedback on lift status, battery life, and the number of active columns, all from the control console. The columns also include an independent mechanical lock, minimising risks and providing reliable safety during maintenance.

To further optimise maintenance operations, Channel Tunnel has also invested in Stertil-Koni’s new WD-5P High Lift Wheel Dolly, designed specifically for the removal and installation of heavy-duty wheels. This hydraulic dolly manages wheel sizes up to 1200 mm and supports up to 500 kg, providing technicians with a safe and efficient tool to handle the heavy wheels used on their specialised vehicles.

Alongside operational improvements, the EARTHLIFT features eco-friendly attributes such as biodegradable hydraulic oil, and many recyclable components.
